I’ve been researching on foods that do not need refrigeration. I’ve been living in a dorm the past few days, and I noticed that my expenses were much higher compared to when I was bringing food to work. I decided to buy foods that I don’t need to put on the fridge and can bring to work as well.

1. Canned goods - Spanish sardines in can, tuna, kernel corn
2. Wheat Bread
3. Peanut Butter
4. Oatmeal
5. Butter - Shelf life is two weeks; just have to store it in a cool, dry place
6. Apple
7. Banana
8. Salt and Pepper
9. Powdered Chocolate Drink
10. Powdered Milk Drink
11. Honey
12. Green Tea

My supply is good for one to two weeks. And each meal (with drinks) costs only about 40-50 Philippine Pesos (about US$1 or so). Yay!

I think I’m enjoying this no-fridge lifestyle. It does not only cut my costs on food and electricity, it also helps the environment as well. Hope I can sustain this for the next few months or years.

If you want to make soup, add in sotanghon or misua in your list. Make sotanghon soup with tuna (spicy tuna has more flavor) and add some water and a bit of salt. For sardines, add misua. Both are tried and tested. :)

If you want to go “fridgeless” for a long time, you have to live a walking distance away from Divisoria. Then you can buy what you need for the day, fresh, if you want to cook. But if you are too lazy to cook, you can just walk to one of those cheap places to eat, if you are not too picky.

When they constructed LRT2, I thought it would start from Masinag all the way to Divisoria. Then I could walk to Masinag LRT from our house in Kingsville, everyday, to shop for fresh produce from Divisoria, and I would not need a refrigerator. But I was not destined to be so lucky. They stopped construction of LRT2 at Santolan, which is two short (2 km + 2 km) jeepney rides away, and my dream of a fridgeless household famed away like smoke.

Maybe they’ll construct the Santolan to Masinag section of LRT2 sometime. I hope that it will be within my lifetime.
